An Introduction to Viagra Side Effects
As with any medicine, there are possible side effects with Viagra® (sildenafil citrate). However, not everyone who takes Viagra will have problems. In fact, most people tolerate the drug well. When people do develop side effects, the symptoms are usually minor, meaning they require no treatment or are easily treated by you or your healthcare provider. In previous research studies, up to 2.5 percent of people taking Viagra stopped their medicine because of side effects.

Common Side Effects of Viagra
Viagra has been studied extensively in clinical trials, with over 3,700 people having been evaluated. In these studies, side effects occurring in a group of people taking the drug are documented and compared to those that occur in another group not taking the medicine. This way, it is possible to see what side effects occur, how often they appear, and how they compare to the group not taking the medicine.
Based on these studies, the most common side effects of Viagra (occurring in more than 2 percent of people) include:
* Headaches --in up to 16 percent of people
* Facial flushing -- up to 10 percent
* Indigestion, known as dyspepsia -- up to 7 percent
* Nasal congestion -- up to 4 percent
* Urinary tract infections (UTI) -- up to 3 percent
* Vision problems, including trouble telling the difference between blue and green, increased sensitivity to light, or blurred vision -- up to 3 percent
* Diarrhea -- up to 3 percent
* Dizziness -- up to 2 percent
* Unexplained rash -- up to 2 percent.
There were some other common side effects (also seen in more than 2 percent of people) that were just as common in people taking a sugar pill instead of Viagra as they were in people taking the actual drug. These side effects included:
* Respiratory tract infections
* Back pain
* Flu-like symptoms
* Joint pain.

Rare Viagra Side Effects
During clinical studies, there were a number of other side effects that occurred in less than 2 percent of people taking Viagra. It is difficult to tell whether these side effects are caused by Viagra or something else.
Some of these possible Viagra side effects include, but are not limited to:
* Allergic reactions
* Angina pectoris
* Migraines
* Temporary vision loss
* Fainting
* Congestive heart failure
* Vomiting
* Dry mouth
* Anemia
* A sudden decrease in or loss of hearing
* Gout
* Arthritis
* Muscle pain (known medically as myalgia)
* Depression
* Seizures
* Anxiety
* Prolonged erections without pain
* Prolonged, painful erections (priapism)
* Insomnia
* Asthma
* Inflammation of the sinuses (sinusitis)
* Cataracts
* Urinary incontinence.
In rare cases, there have also been serious problems that occur in the heart, brain, or blood vessels. These include:
* Heart attack
* Sudden death
* Serious irregular heart rhythms (known as arrhythmias)
* Stroke
* Transient ischemic attack (TIA), which is also called a mini-stroke
* High blood pressure (hypertension)
* Bleeding within the brain or in the spaces just outside the brain
* Bleeding in the lungs.
In these cases, most of the people had cardiovascular (heart or blood vessel) risk factors. Also, these side effects occurred during or shortly after sexual activity. Therefore, it is difficult to tell whether the problems were related to Viagra, the person's existing risk factors, sexual activity, or a combination of these.
There have also been rare cases of a condition called non-arteritic anterior ischemic optic neuropathy (NAION). This condition can lead to sudden loss of vision in one or both eyes (see Viagra and Blindness for more information).
There have been reports of transient global amnesia possibly due to Viagra. Transient global amnesia is a temporary loss of short-term memory. People may not remember recent events and have an impaired ability to form new memories. It usually lasts 24 hours or less and typically has no long-term consequences.
